December 20th, 2006

We have a new guide: Los Angeles Activites with Kids + Toddlers . It has a Santa Monica / Westside point-of-view, but there’s a little for everyone, even folks visiting from out of town. Let us know if we missed anything!

    Hi,
Great sight. The parks you mentioned, do they have sand by the equipment? My son has a trach, and I need to stay away from sand.

  • 3. MSGQuixo  |  March 16th, 2007 at 11:48 am

Thanks for the note. Aiden’s Place has several different play areas, some with and without sand, but they are close so it could be tough if he is tempted. Still, lots of sand-free play there.

There’s a great new Arts and Crafts studio that opened for Kids in Toluca Lake called Froggy’s Arts and Crafts. I have my 3 year old in the storytime/craft class and music drumming class. The great thing is you can pay per class if you want. Also, for $6 an hour you can bring your kid in and do all sorts of art projects and not worry about the mess. The staff is very friendly and the studio is very clean.
They also do great birthday parties. Check it out

Is it true you have a summer school for toddlers this year? If so, would love info. Thanks, Nellie

  • 6. MSGQuixo  |  June 8th, 2007 at 8:10 am

    Hi Nellie,
We, Quixo.com, don’t have any toddler summer school, or any other summer school for that matter. But like many parents we’ve been researching our options. A couple of things that are on our list are: Santa Monica School District summer school at Grant School which is available for anyone going to school next year, starting with future kindergarteners. http://www.grant.smmusd.org/temp/SM_SummerAdv07.pdf Also, the City of Santa Monica has some nice programs that are sorta cheap compared to other programs out there. http://www.smgov.net/seascape/07fest_summer/rec7.htm There are soccer camps through Socceropolis, surf and beach camps as well as swiming classes, tennis classes and more. The Natural History Museum has a nice program for a couple of weeks. http://www.nhm.org/pdfs/AIN_Summer2007_Brochure.pdf Rustic Canyon Park is supposed to have a nice day camp too. That’s all I know! I’m sure a lot of the places on our Toddler and Kid activity list have summer programs too. Good luck!

Five years in the making and occupying an 8,000 square-foot gallery, Noah’s Ark at the Skirball welcomes children and families to immerse themselves in a favorite childhood tale. Inspired by the ancient flood story, which has parallels in diverse cultures around the world, this new, permanent destination invites visitors of all generations to have fun—and to connect with one another, learn the value of community and help build a better world.

Inside a floor-to-ceiling wooden ark, filled to the rafters with whimsical animals, children and families will play, build, climb, explore, collaborate and more. They will conduct a storm, help construct the ark and bask in the glow of a real rainbow. Aboard the ark are hundreds of fanciful animals—from cuddly companions to life-sized puppets—all crafted from recycled materials and everyday objects, including bottle caps, bicycle parts, baseball mitts, keyboards, bamboo steamers, mop heads and rear-view mirrors.

Unique to the Noah’s Ark experience are impromptu “happenings,” surprise interactions and drop-in activities. While visiting the galleries, visitors may meet a puppet, create a take-home art project or hear a story. On the weekends, a variety of informal performances throughout the day will be held in the adjacent amphitheater.

During this inaugural summer, the Skirball offers family programs inspired by Noah’s Ark at the Skirball. (See pages 9-10 for more information).

Im a local preschool art teacher that opened The Art Zone in Hermosa Beach over 4 years ago. From reading your descriptions about kids places, I totally agree!!! You are so on the mark! You have to check out what Ive done. I think you will love it. We are branching out doing art birthday parties out of the studio for people who can’t come to Hermosa Beach for a party. We started doing them by request and have built a program for them. Our website is www.artzone4kids.com We have drop in play sessions during the week open to the public. Not only my place, but there are a lot of new art places for kids and adults coming on the market. Hurray for art!

Hi! Just wanted you to know about the Santa Monica Playhouse Education Conservatory programs for kids ages 4 to 17, with special Early Stages Create-a-Play workshop for little ones ages 4 to 6, and the Tuesday afternoon Mommy (or Daddy) and Me Enchanted Lunchtime Fairytale Theatre program - an interactive theatre experience with crafts, story-telling, sing-a-longs, face painting, enactment of a fairytale, and a picnic lunch! Both of these activities are a super way for kids to learn to appreciate theatre, have fun making new friends, and expand their creative imagination and communication skills!
