I am an avid crow watcher but was shocked not seeing crows at Whittier Narrows yesterday at sunset! There use to be zillions, flying in from all over the city to sleep in the trees at night.They would even fly from Altadena to Whittier Narrows! Where are they?! Did the West Nile Virus kill them? I’m concerned! 9-9-11

I put seed in my bird feeder last week (I haven’t done that in many months) but no birds have shown up yet. This is very unusual, normally I have lots of bird at the feeder. I was wondering if it is because the large number of crows we had last year displaced other birds? I know that the crows raided the nest of the swallows on my front porch.

I am in West LA near Century City.

I started getting friendly with one crow, that I calll “Crow” and he seems to understand and acts just a little embarrassed. Then he was joined by a friend and now there’s a whole bunch of them. Now I don’t know what to do because I’d like to stay friendly with “Crow” but my neighbors are going to start bitching about all the crows we’re having in the neighborhood.

They basically act like a bunch of bikers pulling into town to pillage. I’ve come to really enjoy it but it is still fun to raise my fist and shout obscenities at them like a cranky downstairs neighbor during a kegger.

Hi there
I was interested to read about crows in L.A. When visiting L.A. a fews years ago with my family, we went to Disney Land and although the kids were greatly taken with the rides etc., my attention, when travelling on the circuit train, was drawn to the huge quantities of bird dung laying along the edge of the tracks all over the pipes, everywhere. I was stunned by the amount on the whole circuit and thought the area must be a refuge for some type of bird. At the end of the tour around 4 pm I soon discovered the return of the crows to roost. I must say it was the most spectacular sight and left a far more lasting impression on me than the attractions at the fun park. It left me wondering if Daphne DuMaurier had spent time around the area and been inspired by the behaviour of the crows for her book “The birds”.

I am from Tasmania, Australia and thoroughly enjoy watching the activity of our large Ravens, but they do not seem to gather in such large numbers.
